Turkish Republic of Cyprus Freedom Day

The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is in TRNC for todays ‘Freedom Day.’ The celebrations include a big show of troops, tanks etc. etc. Also at 6pm (4pm British time) the Turkish version of the Red Arrows will perform their display over Kyrenia Harbour.

This morning I had to go to Kyrenia for a bit of shopping. I stopped to have my breakfast at a café next to a big flash hotel. There was a great show of police and men dressed in black looking tougher than Rambo. I asked the owner of the café what was all the commotion? He said the Prime Minister of Turkey was in the Hotel and was due to leave soon for Nicosia for an official engagement before returning later in the day for the festivities in Kyrenia.

My breakfast arrived and as I was tucking in the owner and his daughter got up and stood on the wall which gave them a better view towards the hotel. He shouted over to me to eat and he’d let me know when the Prime Minister’s car approached. A few minutes later, franticly waving of arms informed me the Prime Minister was on the move. I joined them on the wall just as a cavalcade of vehicles approached. The police and security bods on the main road had stopped the traffic. Around ten vehicles, police cars and big black American CIA type looking people carriers swept past. A massive black Mercedes came into view and the owner and his daughter waved so I followed suit. And there he was, the man himself, window wound down waving back at us! I was almost as excited as the owner and his daughter! I’m not sure why I got so excited but I’m certain I won’t be getting another wave from the Prime Minister of Turkey for some time if ever.
I’m told the Freedom Day celebrations are a real spectacle and not to be missed so I know what I’ll be doing later on today. All being equal, photo’s to follow.
